What is amniotic fluid made of? Well it's composition actually changes midway through the pregnancy.
Initially, the fluid is comprised of water produced by the mother. By around 20 weeks gestation, however, this is entirely replaced by fetal urine, as the fetus swallows and pees put the fluid! .
It also comprises of hormones, nutrients and antibodies from the mothers body. Amazing stuff huh? This is why the fluid looks clear when it leaks but if it was collected in a jar it would have a yellowish tinge to it.
Remember if waters break and the fluid appears brown or green, it means baby has done bowel movement in the womb and should be looked at by your care provider right away.
